Eco Innovation

eco-innovation-ecoinnovazione-300x199

The Eco Innovation project, is a consortium between Nofir AS, UAB Egersund Net, UAB Nofir and Qualchem Zrt. The funding from EU are 680 000 Euro.

The goal of this project is to establish a European system for collecting and recycling discarded equipment from the fishing and fish farming industry.

The project started in September 2012, and we have now started to recieve discarded material from Europe. WE dismantle the equipment, and sell the different plastic fractions to recyclers. The PP ropes and PE Nets are recycled as a part of this Eco Innovation Project.

With this project we will reduse plastic waste to sea, and as the material is recycled it will reduce oil consupmtion and CO2 emission.

After three years, our key outcome is:

  • Amount recycled by this project: 36000 tons
  • Decrease in oil consumption: 57 600 tons
  • Decrease in CO2 emission: 57 600 tons
  • Decrease in plastic waste to sea: 12 600 tons
  • Decrease in plastic waste to land fill: 16 200 tons

There are seven different work packages in this project:

Management

Work Package 1:
Manage the Project

Results:

The management of this project works well, and we can notice a big progress . In addition to the formal meetings in the project group (parts of it), and the steering group, we also had a lot of meetings, Skype calls and mail correspondence involving one to three of the partners involved in this project.

The LCA final report is finishedYou can read it here.

The projects main partner is Nofir AS, and they are therefore for work package 1, and managing this project. The steering group consists of members from all the participants in the consortium. The project manager is from Nofir AS, and the project group has persons from all the participating companies.

Work Package 1: Manage the Project

System for collecting

Work Package 2:
System for collecting

Nofir AS is responsible for the work package conserning collecting of material in this project. We want to implement our way of doing this in Europe.

We are researching every interesting costal European country to find out which countries to penetrate, and we have people travelling around contacting interesting companies in the fishing and fish farming industry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Results:

We collected 909 tons in three years.

It is important to  that Nofir is collecting lot of fishing and fish farming equipment in Norway, which subsidize our participation in the Eco Innovation project. We have not included the Norwegian collection in our hours used, travels, and so on. But the total amount of collected material in Europe is quite much higher than described here, if we include Norway.

Amounts we collected during Eco Innovation Project:

  • Iceland – 501 t
  • Scotland – 340 t
  • Ireland – 14 t
  • Denmark – 22 t
  • Netherlands – 33 t

Dismantling

Work Package 3:
Dismantling

The process of dismantling:

The truck full of material is coming to our factory in Tauragetrucks mockupOur workers are unloading the truckWe have to put all the material on the floor in our factory

People are working together on cutting the ropes from nets

People are packing nets into the packing device

We are always sorting the material. This sorted gillnets are ready for shipping to the factory for recycling

One of the goal in Eufir project was to find dismantling partners. One of them is Emel Balik, Turkish company located near Ismir which is owned 50% by Egersund Group. The main part of their activities is production and maintaining fish farming nets. We use them to collect and dismantle material coming from medditarian countries.

The reason of dismantling:

We collect discarded material that has not been dismantled. In order to make the waste collected valuable, the equipment is dismantled in to sorted fractions.1a9d989cff1ed37465002da6425dd847

Recycling and further use of the material

Work Package 4:
Recycling and further use of the material

Within this project we are working on finding a good ways of recycling PP ropes and PE Nets. In addition, All discarded material are sold down stream. Are you interrested in our fractions for recycling?

Results:

When trucks arrives in Taurage, the fabric workers unloads the trucks, and they dismantle the equipment into different plastic fractions. The workers are now getting really good in deciding what type the different plastic is.

 Results:

During Eco innovation project we found a system from collecting to recycling:

In 2015 we cooperated with company that produced for us 1000 pairs of socks made from fishing equipment. This was a great example for poeople that old and useless fishing equipment can be turned into brand new, usefull products such us socks, carpets and swimsuits.

Logistics

Work Package 5:
Logistics

Collecting all over Europe, dismantling in the east of Europe, and selling the dismantled material all over the world; we need satisfying solutions for transportation of the equipment. One work package is dedicated to make this right.

Results:

During Eco innovation project we optimized our logistic system. First of all, we made Nofir’s truck.

trucks mockup

Second of all, we have cooperated with Emel Balik so all the material from medditarian countries is dismantled in Turkey. This cooperation was very important for Nofir, as high cost of trasnsport was one of the biggest challenge for Nofir.

Exploitation and business plan

Work Package 6:
Exploitation & Business plan

The business plan includes a detailed analyses of costs and benefits of the porposed solution as well as an indication of the economic competitiveness of the solution in the market. An analyse of the acailabilities and attractiveness of alternatives will be included in the business plan. Each member of the consortium will make their analyses, as input to the overall business plan.

The exploitation plan will focus on the commercial applications and potential interest during and after the project execution in order to gurarantee an actual market uptake of the proposed solution. All partners will have their own exploitation plan, giving input to the overall plan. The plan will include external companies and organisations that will participate to exploitation during the project.
