Our partner Healthy Seas together with Nofir has just started cooperation with the Urk fishing community in Netherlands. The goal of this action is to bring the old fishing nets from Urk into the Healthy Seas recycling process. Nofir will take care of transport and preparing material for recycling.
On 1.12.2015 Nofir participated in first transport of fishing nets from Urk to the factory in Lithuania where the material will be prepared for recycling. This time almost 20 tonnes of fishing nets was loaded on the truck but it is estimated that each year 150 tonnes of material will be collected within this project.
– This is win-win situation: Urk fishermen can get rid off old and useless nets and we, I mean all the companies involved in this process, can take care of the environment by reusing the material. In this cooperation, together with fishermen we try to reduce amount of nets, which might end up in the sea
– says Martyna Zajder, PR & Marketing Manager in Nofir.
Some of the fishing nets will be recycled at Aquafil’s high-tech factory in Slovenia to make ECONYL®, a high-quality yarn that is used by companies to produce different kind of products – from clothing to carpets.
